| Lugansk is one of the largest cities in Ukraine, an important scientific and cultural center.
Lugansk State Medical University ( LSMU) is modern institution of higher education with rich
traditions. From the moment of its establishment in 1956 till 2001 14737 doctors and 116
nurses-bachelors were prepared at the university. Among them there were 723 doctors for 52
foreign countries. High level of qualification allows graduates of the University to work
successfully in many countries of the world, to achieve great success in science and practical
public health services. Among them are scientists, heads of public health services, honoured
doctors.
The names of rectors who headed Lugansk State Medical University during these years are well
known in Ukraine and abroad.

At present our rector is Professor Ivchenko Valery Constantinovich
Doctor of medical sciences, Professor chief of traumatology,orthopedics and military surgery
department.
Lugansk State Medical University is attested according to the highest (the fourth) level of
accrediation. It prepares specialists in 172 medical specialities. Good facilities, high
qualification level of the teaching staff., scientific and methodical provision led Lugansk
State Medical University to one of the leading places in the country.
365 teachers, among them 63 doctors of sciences, including five honoured science and technique
workers of Ukraine. One honoured worker of public education of Ukraine, two honoured doctors of
Ukraine, two laureates of state prize of Ukraine carry out pedagogical, scientific, medical and
educational work at 48 departments.
University has very good facilities. There are five buildings for theorotical classes and a
wide net of clinical bases of medical institutions of Lugansk which are equiped at the level
corresponding to world standards. A modern library with the fund which exceeds five thousand
specimen includes electronic mail with internet. The University has everything necessary for the
organization of welfare and leisure of students, including modern hostels, a sports complex, a
club for free time activities.
The university is in constant dynamic development.
